A Case of the Mondays: Sick, Optimistic, and Booked Solid
Nicole and I have been fighting off a summer cold all week, the kind that turns "let's watch tape" into "let's lie on the couch and stare at the TV while our brains slowly reboot." It has been, objectively, lame. Decongestants at 9am, a box of tissues doing more work than the Commanders' offensive line, the whole bit. And yet somehow we still managed to be our normal levels of awesome, because that's just what we do. Sick Ben and Sick Nicole are still better company than most people at full strength, I don't make the rules.
Proof: with zero UVA or Commanders football to actually watch this weekend, we still went to Buffalo Wild Wings, entered their online trivia, and won enough of it to walk away with free wings for next weekend. Which, and I cannot stress this enough, is the real football weekend. We have an agenda. Friday is Norfolk State at Scott Stadium, which means Mike Vick is walking back into Charlottesville as an opposing head coach, a sentence I did not expect to type in 2026. Saturday is a party at our friend Sam's house. Sunday is the big dance. We are peaking at exactly the right time, cold or no cold.
Speaking of things that have been under the weather, Dan Quinn's job security is suddenly a real conversation, which is wild for a coach who hasn't played a single meaningful 2026 snap yet. Hogs Haven's write-up captured the exact spiral every Commanders fan has had with themselves at 2am: start the analysis convinced Quinn's seat is warm, lay out the case, feel good about the logic, and then your own brain talks you back off the ledge by kickoff. That's not analysis, that's a support group.
The offensive line is still the thing nobody can stop poking at. Fan anxiety over the O-line's skill and depth spiked hard enough to get its own survey results post, and Rachaad White is treating his hamstring recovery like appointment television, working back up from individual reps with everyone holding their breath. He bet on himself this offseason, and there's no room left for that bet to not pay off.
Here's where my gut starts talking, though. Oweh and Chaisson were flat-out winning reps against Tunsil in training camp before he went down, and I haven't been able to shake that since the O-line panic started. That's the part people conveniently leave out when they're wringing their hands about our offensive line: two of our best pass rushers were treating our new left tackle like a moving screen door, and neither of them missed more than a week themselves. Add in that our coaching staff has looked deliberately, almost suspiciously vanilla on both sides of the ball all preseason, and I keep landing on the same thought: maybe that's the plan. Maybe we've been sandbagging. Cold medicine talking, possibly. Gut feeling, definitely. I think we sneak this one from the Eagles.
Because let's be honest about what Sunday actually is. Zach Ertz, who used to play here, might be lining up for a storybook reunion, with the Eagles, in Week 1, against us. I will never hate the guy. He moved the chains over and over during Jayden's magical rookie season, even though the man could not manufacture a single yard after the catch to save his life. And some part of me fully expects him to come back and get one big, back-breaking key play against us anyway. No hate, just dread wrapped in respect. Riggo's Rag called the reunion a "bitter twist," and that's underselling it: this isn't just an opener, it's the team that ended our season in the NFC Championship, walking into our building first.
UVA should handle Norfolk State without much drama, up to and including whatever fourth-stringers Tony Elliott trusts to play meaningful snaps. Vick's a good coach, but this roster gap is a roster gap. Still, you never know, and that's exactly why we show up.
One more thing that genuinely warms my heart: we checked the numbers, and this site has now been read from twenty different countries. Twenty. The bulk of you are still right here in the US, obviously, but Switzerland and Australia are out here reading about Commanders roster churn more than I have any right to expect, Canada and Greece are showing up in real numbers, and somewhere in Morocco, Norway, Russia, South Korea, Sweden, Taiwan, Thailand, and Panama there is at least one person who has read a sentence about Trent Scott's practice squad candidacy. I don't know you, I don't know why you're here, and I love every single one of you for it.
Friday, Saturday, Sunday. Football, friends, and a rematch I've been waiting eight months for. Get well soon, us. See you at the Eagles game.
